"Abs are made in the kitchen! If you're working out every day but still eating fast food regularly, you won't see the results you're craving." - Sunny Akhigbe
As the autumn weather quickly fades and we launch into the cold winter and the holiday season, most people find themselves eating more, gaining weight, and becoming sedentary.
Why do we eat more when it’s cold outside?
The cold weather drops our body temperature and our appetites become more stimulated as a result. And eating generates heat... therefore leading to a rise in body temperature! It's a vicious cycle.
Holidays: With the upcoming holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Years, we find ourselves socializing more which leads to more alcohol consumption, consuming comfort foods, and sweets heavily laden with calories.
Primitive Instinct: Long ago when we were hunting and gathering, we would increase our caloric intake as the days got shorter and colder. We tend to seek out food and eat it faster during the sunlight hours.
It's cold outside: And we're just trying to stay warm! A giant bowl of mashed potatoes and hearty stew would keep us warmer than light salads?
We just want comfort: Cold days take an emotional toll on all of us in one way or another. We just want to snuggle up at home with a bowl of pasta, a bottle of wine, and binge watch Netflix.
It didn't happen overnight. It's not like one day it's warm outside and you're eating your normal amount of calories and the next day it's cold and you've bumped up your intake by 500 calories. It's a gradual process and it's the reason we're constantly talking about getting fit for summer.
We're going to eat regardless. So what should we eat?
